Komba

Komba is an Angolan religious ritual, celebrated seven days after someone passes away, where friends and relatives honour the deceased by drinking their favourite drinks, eating their favourite food, dancing and singing their favourite songs while sharing experiences and telling stories about their life. The irony that the best party of your life happens after you’re dead, and the idea that we should live every day as if it was our last one, sets the common thread for ’Komba’. So, play this set on my grave.

Una breve BIO.

Probablemente mi primer recuerdo musical fue cuando se comenzaron a transmitir los primeros videos musicales a través de un arcaiquísimo Cablevision en los ochentas. Ahí descubrí a Prince, Billy Idol, Def Leppard, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode y Madonna. Crecí pegado al radio (WFM, Rock 101) grabando (en mi grabadora de doble cassette), estudiando y conociendo de todo. Los sábados por la noche en WFM mezclaba Martín Delgado, yo me desvelaba para grabarlo y me volaba la cabeza lo que el hacía con la música.

Con el paso de los años mi camino se encontró con el de Gerardo de la Garza que tenia un sonido de fiestas llamado “Sucesso”, yo quería aprender a mezclar y el me invitó a su trabajar con él, tenia 16 años. Empecé a tomar clases con él y con Alejandro Vigil DJ de otro sonido llamado “Baxter” y a practicar obsesivamente.

Sucesso creció y se convirtió en el vehiculo en el que cada fin de semana un grupo de amigos “trabajabamos” sonorizando comidas, fiestas o bodas, nos reventabamos gran parte de lo que cobrábamos y acumulábamos aventuras. Yo me aventaba siete horas mezclando sin despeinarme y nuestro estilo comenzó a ser muy apreciado.

En ese entonces cayó el muro y el trance se comenzó a expander y los ecos de la “Ruta Destroy” y el New Beat comenzaban a escucharse en los antros nacionales como Mekano y Medusas. Quedé infectado.

En el verano de 1994 trabajé un verano en Tower Records y conocí al maestro Guy Robert, en ese entonces encargado del área de dance de la tienda. Guy traía un engrane gigante colgado, tenia la colección más excelsa de música y quería aprender a mezclar; lo que comenzó como un intercambio, terminó en una gran amistad.

En ese entonces por ahí del 1997 nos fue llegando la factura de largos años de Sucesso y lo desintegramos en la cima. Paralelamente las fiestas de psytrance comenzaron en México y un buen día el Guy se enteró de iba a tocar en México Total Eclipse. Esa noche en medio del éxtasis de escuchar “Psychomachine” de X-dream al aire libre y en un sistema de audio grande, mi vida se recodificó.

Durante cinco años estuve metidísimo en las fiestas psycho tocando al lado de gente como Tim Healey, Planet BEN, Dimitry Nakov, Logic Bomb y cumplí mi sueño de conocer y estar en un escenario junto a X.Dream. Conocí a un montón de gente increible, me divertí como enano pero también me vi en medio del lado oscuro de las fiestas y en el momento en que todo iba hacia arriba sufrí un par de ataques epilépticos. La doble vida me estaba quemando. Trabajaba de lunes a viernes en una oficina, mezclaba por las noches, fue demasiado. Tuve que tomar –muy convencido- la dolorosísima decisión de alejarme del reven, colgar los audífonos y sanarme. Me volví un bedroom Dj.

Me enfoqué en mi trabajo y un buen día esto dio frutos, pero el gusano de la mezcla y música nunca paró, así que por casualidad di con mi ahora Sensei Ivan “Antigravity” Vargas y aprendí a mezclar en la compu. Mi universo se amplio exponencialmente y jugar con música nunca fue tan entretenido, desafiante y enaltecedor como hoy.

En fin, esto es un poco de lo que existe detrás de DJ Pit-UFO, un DJ technoso, housero, cumbianchero y apasionado melómano.

Gracias a todos los que me siguen, disfrutan lo que hago, han bailado a mis ritmos y que saben que la música es importante.
